\u201cSound Money\u201d the story of the artwork being auctioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist, Ms. Jiaying Liu, has been using blockchain technology to create artworks since 2017. Just before CAFA\u2019s (Central Academy of Fine Arts) 2020 Graduation Exhibition , she completed the \u201cSound Money\u201d Series, it did not draw much public attention when these works were first released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As COVID-19 seriously damaged the U.S. economy, Trump implemented a rare unprecedented policy, \u201chelicopter money\u201d, it distributed dollar currency to the entire American population. Jiaying was inspired by this phenomenon \u2014 through analyzing the Ether blockchain transaction data she selected a thousand of the most active players in CryptoArt and airdropped Cryptocurrency in the denomination of \u201cThousand Dollars\u201d to these Ether addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days after, interestingly the \u201cSound Money\u201d artworks were being auctioned off in CryptoArt community and the tokenised artwork Dollars<\/em> with limited edition were soon sold out. Collectors were interested to come across an artist who was creating artworks about Crypto-currency, they started to search for more information about these artworks under the entry of \u201cSound Money\u201d. This is an intriguing marketing campaign that helped the artist sell out her series of artworks imitating America\u2019s Helicopter Money-dropping movement. What\u2019s more interesting is when these collectors saw the artist selling specially made \u201c3 Dollar\u201d and \u201c7 Dollar\u201d that had the same price as it\u2019s denomination, they also put their received \u201cThousand Dollars\u201d for $1,000 bidding price on the CryptoArt trading platforms OpenSea,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSound Money \u201d\u6b63\u5728\u62cd\u5356\u7684\u827a\u672f\u6545\u4e8b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artwork \u201cZero Dollar<\/em>\u201d in the Sound Money<\/em> series extensively uses the cyber cultural element of \u201cmeme\u201d. In CAFA 2020 Graduation Exhibition Miss Jiaying Liu updated the most recent bidding price (i.e. the price updated given on April 28th<\/sup>, 2020 was submitted to CAFA) of the “Zero Dollar\u201d meme<\/em> artwork labeling it within the art piece. Jiaying zeroed in the Dollar, stripped of Dollar\u2019s symbolic meanings, and endowed new value with new symbols onto the Dollar. Jiaying released 100 pieces of Zero Dollar<\/em> on OpenSea, tagging 0 as the initial price for each piece, so the audience could bid arbitrarily with any price they wish to attached on the work. As said by the artist, each piece of Sound Money<\/em> artworks is closely related to the auction, and if the work was never bid for it was not \u201cfinished\u201d. Her blockchain artworks are created on the topics of \u201cCryptocurrency\u201d, \u201cCredibility Creation\u201d and \u201cTransaction\u201d, while \u201cTraffic\u201d is also an important element of her works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZero Dollar<\/em>\u201d is an artwork that is a part of the \u201cSound Money<\/em>\u201d series. It is not only an image but a non fungible token (NFT) on the Ethereum Blockchain to possess a feature of unique existence in cyber space. The artist binds the symbolised \u201cZero Dollar\u201d to the Cryptocurrency, which received a bid of 3.6 ETH on CryptoArt exchange. This work argued on how much premium is created by Cryptocurrency against the banknote paper symbolising the US dollar, as well as raised the question on the US dollar\u2019s symbolic property and benchmark value setting for assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cSound Money<\/em>\u201d series, on the basics of the Zero Dollar<\/em>, the artist further collected a large number of images of \u201cHow one would feel when you see 0 Dollar?\u201d. In the collection, \u201cmemes\u201d occupied most of the images, they were combined with the 0 Dollar notes to generate another group of Zero Dollar images that corresponds to the issuance of non-homogenized tokens (NFTs) on the blockchain, which are also auctioned in real time on blockchain platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work, embeded with President Nixon\u2019s portrait, uses the smallest token decimal of Ethereum, i.e. , or 1 Wei, as the denomination of paper money and is sold with the same price with denomination, it could be the Crypto artwork with the closest to zero bidding price in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2020, the Trump administration adopted the policy of helicopter money-dropping to cope with the pandemic. The artwork of \u201c1000 Dollars<\/em>\u201d was therefore finished and then exhibited in the form of a 3D Model of a money-dropping helicopter at CAFA 2020 Graduation Exhibition, where the visitors could scan Qr-code to obtain a copy of this digital NFT artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By taking advantage of NFT characteristics, the artist wants 100,000 people on the blockchain to own her work for a period of time, but not forever. This is a completely new concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist airdropped the art works to 100,000 users, however, something interesting happened when a total of 2050 pieces were airdropped, major NFT platforms, both OpenSea and Rarible, blacklisted the works contract, and users who received the works were unable to see the contents either on auction platforms or in the wallets if using Opensea SDK. In other words, the CryptoAds artworks were blocked by both OpenSea and Rarible without any explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A platform that is supposed to provide services for crypto assets has shown behavior that goes against the ideology of the crypto community. Isn\u2019t this act ironic to the supposed \u201cdecentralizing\u201d block chain technology?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, along with the idea of Web3 (decentralized Internet) taking root in public and decentralized services keep growing, these once-blocked NFTs will reappear in decentralized media someday in the future. At that time, people will rediscover the \u201cNFT\u201d in their wallets and reflect on the core ideology of Crypto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
